What would Anna do on Mother’s Day?

An American woman Anna Jarvis trademarked ‘Mother’s Day’ in 1912 and campaigned for the ‘second Sunday in May’ as an international day to recognise and honour mothers. Ironically, Anna spent the final years of her life campaigning against Mother’s Day. She felt that the day had lost its meaning by becoming too commercial. She had an especially low opinion of commercial greeting cards, once saying, “A printed card means nothing except that you are too lazy to write to the woman who has done more for you than anyone in the world.” Anna did not mince her words!

So this year, our question for you on Mother’s Day is “What would Anna do?” She certainly would not spend money on a greeting card, fancy flowers or a box of choccies! This year, how about giving mum what she needs most—the gift of time. Quality time with family, time to herself, time to relax, time off, time to do the things she loves.

Here are some ideas:

  • A weekend where everybody else does mum’s jobs around the house.
  • A few hours on her own to watch her favourite movie, take a long bath, do crafts, have a nap, or read a book.
  • Mum gets to choose an outing or activity to do with the family—it might be hiking or gardening or going to the market.
  • A home-made voucher book where you pledge to provide help when mum needs it—for example, wash the car, mow the lawn, give her a massage. (Great idea, Karen!)

To all the mums out there, thank you for everything you’ve ever done and will do for us, for your sacrifices and selflessness, for all your support and tireless work in motherhood. You are truly appreciated and dearly loved.
